Peace Movements. A Collage. assembles signs of 1980s peace-movements in the East and in the West.

While the peace dove was widely and visibly used by peace movements in Western States, in the GDR Picasso’s peace dove was already utilized as a symbol by the so called peace state itself. A relief that depicts a Picasso peace dove and the words “Berlin Stadt des Friedens” on a fassade in Berlin-Mitte still bears witness to that aspiration.

Other signs, which hint at oppositional groups for peace in the GDR, such as the image of a cut out sign - most likely that of a “Swords to Ploughshares”- badge, which was banned in the GDR in 1982 - and a self-made peace-sign on a piece of clothing next to it, were collaged with the image of a patchwork peace-banner from the “Stop the Arms Race” demonstration in 1983 in Brussels. The banner of the „Women’s International League for Peace and Liberation“ consists among others of an array of peace-doves and the symbol of a rocket with a bold lettered “NO” next to it.

Friedensbewegungen. Eine Collage. versammelt Zeichen der Friedensbewegungen der 1980er Jahre im Osten und Westen.

In westlichen Staaten war die Friedenstaube Symbol der Friedensbewegungen, in der DDR wurde Picassos Friedenstaube vom sogenannten Friedensstaat selbst bereits als Symbol genutzt. Ein Relief, das eine Picasso-Friedenstaube und die Worte „Berlin Stadt des Friedens“ an einer Fassade in Berlin-Mitte zeigt, zeugt noch heute von diesem Anspruch.

In der Collage versammeln sich andere Zeichen. Einerseits sind das Zeichen, die auf oppositionelle Gruppen für den Frieden in der DDR hinweisen, wie das Bild eines ausgeschnittenen Aufnähers, vermutlich eines „Schwerter zu Pflugscharen“-Zeichens, das 1982 in der DDR verboten worden war. Andererseits sind das Variationen von Friedenstauben oder das Symbol einer Rakete mit einem fettgedruckten „NO“ daneben. Letztere sind Teil eines Patchwork-Friedensbanners der „Women’s International League for Peace and Liberation“ auf der „Stop the Arms Race“-Demonstration 1983 in Brüssel.
